Serenity HospiceCare launches Healing Hearts

Trish Courtois, a social worker at Serenity HospiceCare, has a special place in her heart for those who are coping with the grief of losing a loved one. While working with families in her bereavement coordinator role, she began to see a need for a unique kind of grief support group for adults.

Courtois is launching Healing Hearts to fill that need. She describes the group as a safe place for people who have lost a loved one to express their grief, share their memories and honor them through reflection and personalized mementos.

“I wanted Healing Hearts to be unique from other grief support groups. I believe it’s important to talk about the loss of a loved one with others who understand that loss, but it’s also very therapeutic to share the good memories of your loved one and honor them in a personal way.”

During Healing Hearts meetings, group members will have the opportunity to share memories and stories of their loved one, participate in activities to promote healing and create personalized mementos to honor their loved one such as Christmas ornaments, scrapbooks, wearable charms, and more.

“Grief affects everyone so differently, and each person has their own unique journey,” said Courtois. “Healing Hearts is a group that acknowledges everyone moves through that journey at a varied pace, with numerous ways of expressing emotions and countless methods that help their healing process.”

Healing Hearts will hold their meetings quarterly in two locations. The first meeting is scheduled for Monday, August 22, at Serenity HospiceCare from 6-8:30 p.m. The second is on Monday, August 29, from 6-8:30 p.m. at the Mineral Area College Perry County Higher Education Center. Those interested in attending should RSVP to Serenity HospiceCare at 573-431-0162. Meetings are free of charge and open to any adult who is grieving the loss of a loved one.
