Serve Others

If you are looking for a way to make a difference in the lives of others, we have the perfect volunteer opportunity for you. You can help us provide peace of mind and comfort when it matters most.

Volunteers, who are they?

A service that our hospice patients and their families find invaluable is our volunteer program. Serenity HospiceCare volunteers are thoroughly trained and are committed to providing patients and families with support and companionship.

Every Serenity HospiceCare volunteer is interviewed and must pass several detailed background checks before they are accepted into the program.

Our volunteers are caring, committed people who want to make a difference in the lives of others. They are dependable and trustworthy and are sensitive to the family’s needs, as many of our volunteers have themselves experienced hospice and know what a blessing that kind of support can be.

Our volunteers come from a variety of backgrounds and interests, but all share the common desire to do what they can to help lessen the burden of families touched by terminal illness.

“You make a living by what you get.

You make a life by what you give.”

~ Winston Churchill

The role of Serenity HospiceCare volunteers is to provide support to patients as well as their families through periodic visits. That support may come in the form of providing the patient with companionship, listening to their concerns, and staying with the patient while family members run errands. Duties vary from patient to patient, and the visit schedule is decided upon between the volunteer and the patient and their family.

It is important to note that Serenity HospiceCare volunteers are not allowed to:

Perform personal care, such as bathing and wound treatment changes

Handle/distribute patient medications

Transport patients

What does it take to be a Serenity HospiceCare Volunteer?

A caring attitude

A committed spirit

A desire to make a difference in the lives of others

Did You Know?

Research suggests that volunteering is particularly beneficial to the health of older adults and those serving 100 hours annually. According to the report:

A study of adults age 65 and older found that the positive effect of volunteering on physical/mental health is due to the personal sense of accomplishment an individual gains from his or her volunteer activities

Another study found volunteering led to lower rates of depression in individuals 65 and older

A Duke study found individuals who volunteered after experiencing heart attacks reported reductions in despair and depression two factors that that have been linked to mortality in post-coronary artery disease patients

An analysis of longitudinal data found that individuals over 70 who volunteered approximately 100 hours had less of a decline in self-reported health and functioning levels, experienced lower levels of depression and had more longevity

Volunteering: It’s as good for you as for those you serve!
